Stage 3: An Open World

So, you've made it this far, but there is a ravine between you and the next set of tutorials.  Select the dirt in your inventory and build yourself a bridge.  If you need help, watch this quick video.  The dirt is in the first inventory slot, so I press "1" before right-clicking on the spot where I plan to build my bridge:

Once you cross the ravine, you enter a small village where Stages 3 and 4 can be found.  To follow along with this walkthrough, notice important instructions related to mining directly in front of you and on the wall to the left.  Build a stone axe before continuing forward to build torches.  On your left is a cave to mine in.  Use torches (right-click) to light the dark cave, placing them on the floors or the walls of the cave.  Mine using your stone axe (holding left-click) to collect coal and more.  When you exit the cave, turn right to return to the ravine you crossed earlier.

Facing the ravine, turn left down the path toward the animals.  You will first see a house on your left.  Step in to learn the recipes for making two home staples: a bed and a storage chest.  When ready, exit the home and turn left.

As you walk forward, you will see animals and blacksmiths.  Immediately to your right is a recipe for building a door to add to the house.  Go ahead and build one, place it on the house, and return to this spot.

Next, take a tour of the animal pens.  Be sure to read each animals sign for information about how to tame, breed, and use these animals to your benefit.  When you exit the farm, turn right and head to the blacksmith's forge.

Visit the apprentice and right-click on him to learn how to use the furnace.  You always need to add a fuel (bottom) and something to heat (top) to use it correctly.  The furnace is especially helpful in survival mode because cooking food and creating refined materials is essential.  Grab some materials out of the chest, right-click on the furnace, and make fiery magic happen:

You will also find tutorials on using cauldrons to hold liquids and anvils to repair worn down items.  These can also be helpful in survival mode.  Leaving the forge, you will see ahead a small farm plot with grains growing.  Farming crops is the easiest way to collect food in the game.  All you need is dirt near water.  Grab the hoe and seed out of the chest.  With hoe in hand, left-click to collect the wheat and carrots.  Then, right click the grass to prepare it for planting.  Finally, with seeds in hand, right click to plant the seeds on the tilled ground:

Leaving the farm, passing in front of the blacksmith's forge, you will see a white building on the right with tutorials on redstone.  Harnessing redstone is similar to having electricity, controlling lights and switches from a distance.  While it is handy and powerful, I don't see it being used right now in classroom Minecraft projects.  If you want to learn more, though, try it out.  Redstone is cool stuff.

Passing the redstone building, you will come to a center for learning archery and fishing.  Grab a fishing pole, bow and arrow out of the chest and have at it.  Fishing requires casting a line in the water (right-click), waiting for the sound and movement of the bobber, and then quickly right-clicking once to reel in the fish.  Archery involves drawing the bow back by holding the right-click button, aiming at your target, and letting go.  Long shots require aiming higher and short shots require the opposite.

In the middle of the village you will see a tower, the home of the soul searcher.  Follow the instructions to build a ladder and climb up (W key) to meet him.  Climb down backward using the S key.  Once you're on the ladder, do not continue to press the S key.

Once you are back on the ground, head toward the red school house, where Stage 4 will teach us the teacher tips and tricks for world building in Minecraft.  You will need to write down a few commands that are invaluable tools for teachers.

See you in the next article where we will walk you through Stage 4: Minecraft: Education Edition Features.

Like your ELMO but with an iPad (elementary classroom teachers)

I used AirServer to create the infinity mirror effect. We were in a meeting today and Dominic told us about this fantastic idea. As we discussed all things technology he explained one method of using the iPad as a portable ELMO. It was too cool not to share. Step 1 Make sure you have AirServer running on your laptop. 1. Click the Windows key on your keyboard or click the icon in the lower left of your screen. 2. Just start typing AirServer. 3. Click AirServer. Don't see it? Contact technology or your building tech person. Step 2 Connect your teacher iPad to your laptop. 1. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen. Start by swiping in the bezel, the black plastic part surrounding the screen. 2. Click AirPlay Mirroring. 3. Click your name. Step 3 Open the camera app and instant portable ELMO! Anything you see in the camera's len will be broadcast to the big screen. I just used this method to take a picture of my notebook as a demonstration of how co

Who is emailing me? The Blue Man Group??? (Add an image to your Google account.)

WHY It is always nice to put a face with a name. Sometimes we need a tiny little reminder of what someone looks like because we don't see them very often. Follow these steps to add/change the image associated with your Google account. HOW Open your email. Click your image. It might just be a blue circle if you have not added something already. Click Change . Find an image you like. Your amazing new image will appear. From now on everyone can put a name to a face!

Annotate PDF? How might I do that?

So I have a PDF and I need to edit it. Here is one method that works pretty well for me. Open Word. Click File .  1. Click Open . 2. Click Browse . 3. Find the PDF you want to annotate. 4. Click Open . Click OK when you see this box. Bam! Your PDF now opens in Word. Note: you maybe have to click Enable Editing at the top of the screen. Finished editing and want to turn it back into a PDF? Click File . 1. Click Save As . 2. Click This PC . 3. Pick a location. I usually save things to my desktop. 4. Click Save as type - and choose PDF. 5. Click Save .
