Tasty FACS - Merging FACS with WeVideo

Introduction

Your task is to document what you create in FACS. I am sure most of us have create a billion different videos over our lifetimes but there is a chance creating one to teach someone something is a new experience. This lesson will step you through the process of shooting a video to show and tell a process.

We will used this Tasty video as a point of reference.

In class, we watched this video twice. The first time we focused what you see and what you noticed.  For the second viewing, we broke into small focus groups. Each group watched for just one thing. The goal was to pick out something specific they could reproduce in their own Tasty FACS video.

Focus Groups

  • Audience - Who are you creating this video for and what do you think they will need to know by the end?
  • Plan - Sketch out what you shoot. This is the single most important, and often skipped, step in the whole project. If you plan your shots you will do less work than the other teams in the classroom guaranteed. Use a simple storyboard, or post-its, it shouldn't be anything overly fancy.
  • Sound - Super soft background music is good, if it is too strong it will overpower your video. If you add voice, be mindful of the super noisy classroom.
  • Lighting - Overhead lights can be too harsh and make your food look weird. Try to use as much natural light as possible, if need be use a phone's flashlight to help eliminate shadows.
  • Background - If you plate your food on a messy table, the whole thing looks terrible. Make sure you stage your backgrounds like they do in the video.

Video Breakdown

Audience

I feel this is targeted towards college kids and anyone looking for something easy and in a mug.

Much of this video makes the recipes accessible to anyone looking for a quick snack. The way the videos are constructed illustrates how easy this could be for anyone to copy. I'm confident many of our elementary students could create most every mug recipe shown.

Plan

I love this shot. All the ingredients are measured out and put into these little dishes. Then as each is poured, what it is and the amount shows up in plain text.

Similar to the shot above, everything is chopped and staged on the plate. Look how the colors are nicely displayed and ready to be scooped into the mug.

Sound

Simple music is played throughout the whole video. There isn't any kitchen noise or talking. The food and text must speak loudly to make sure everyone is on the same page.
I assume there isn't any talking because the food is the most important element and voices would just get in the way.

Lighting

There are no shadows or washed out colors in the food. I would imagine some of that is due to the color of the mug. A darker color mug, plate or bowl might not allow the cheese to really pop.
Think how you can use contrasting and complimentary colors to heighten the look of what you create.

Background

Look how clean and organized the table is.
The set up is simple and uncluttered.

The plate is in the foreground and the clean table is in the background.
These two add depth.

The simple mug takes up almost the entire screen.
The mug is the background while the spoon is in the foreground.

How To Edit

Getting Started

Make sure you have created a folder in your Drive to save your videos in, this will make the editing much easier.

If you have a phone, download the WeVideo app and login with your school Google account. You can edit on your Chromebook and/or your mobile device. You must use your school Google account to log in with.

Importing to WeVideo

I organized my clips in Drive. I number them, that saved me a ton of time when I started editing in WeVideo.

To import from Drive to WeVideo.
Open WeVideo.
Click Import.

Click the Drive icon.

Select your clips and then click the big blue button.

Imported Clips
Your clips will appear. It will take a few minutes to fully import. You should wait until the spinning line disappears before you drag them to the timeline below.

Setting Up Your Timeline
1. Drag a clip down to the Video 1 timeline.
2. You can use this to zoom in/out.

To add text to your clips.
1. Click Text.
2. Drag the type of text you want to the Text 1 timeline slot. Double click on it to edit what it says.

Other Editing Techniques
If you click on a clip it will highlight in orange.
Click the scissors you can trim the clip.

This will only work if you have two clips back-to-back.
1. Click Transitions.
2. Drag the transition between two clips. It is recommended to only use ONE type of transition for your whole video.

Adding audio
1. Click Audio.
2. Drag the clip to the Audio 1 timeline.
3. Turn the volume down A LOT.
Do not use any music you can't legally use which really just means you do not have the rights to use any popular music.

When you are finished, click FINSH.

Make sure you have an informative title.
Only save it in SD, DO NOT save as HD.
Make sure you have selected Drive in addition to WeVideo.
Click Export. This will take some time.

Tips/Warnings/Ideas

It will take a while will finalize your video, don't wait until the last minute to do this step.

DO NOT save the project in HD. It will take longer and the videos are usually never played on an HD device.

Lighting and sound is everything, controlling for that is key.

Some of my best ideas have come from the WeVideo YouTube channel. The most innovation is looking at their real estate videos, many new ideas.

Like your ELMO but with an iPad (elementary classroom teachers)

I used AirServer to create the infinity mirror effect. We were in a meeting today and Dominic told us about this fantastic idea. As we discussed all things technology he explained one method of using the iPad as a portable ELMO. It was too cool not to share. Step 1 Make sure you have AirServer running on your laptop. 1. Click the Windows key on your keyboard or click the icon in the lower left of your screen. 2. Just start typing AirServer. 3. Click AirServer. Don't see it? Contact technology or your building tech person. Step 2 Connect your teacher iPad to your laptop. 1. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen. Start by swiping in the bezel, the black plastic part surrounding the screen. 2. Click AirPlay Mirroring. 3. Click your name. Step 3 Open the camera app and instant portable ELMO! Anything you see in the camera's len will be broadcast to the big screen. I just used this method to take a picture of my notebook as a demonstration of how co

Who is emailing me? The Blue Man Group??? (Add an image to your Google account.)

WHY It is always nice to put a face with a name. Sometimes we need a tiny little reminder of what someone looks like because we don't see them very often. Follow these steps to add/change the image associated with your Google account. HOW Open your email. Click your image. It might just be a blue circle if you have not added something already. Click Change . Find an image you like. Your amazing new image will appear. From now on everyone can put a name to a face!

Annotate PDF? How might I do that?

So I have a PDF and I need to edit it. Here is one method that works pretty well for me. Open Word. Click File .  1. Click Open . 2. Click Browse . 3. Find the PDF you want to annotate. 4. Click Open . Click OK when you see this box. Bam! Your PDF now opens in Word. Note: you maybe have to click Enable Editing at the top of the screen. Finished editing and want to turn it back into a PDF? Click File . 1. Click Save As . 2. Click This PC . 3. Pick a location. I usually save things to my desktop. 4. Click Save as type - and choose PDF. 5. Click Save .
