How is this STEM?

I came home to this package the other night. Two feet by four feet and it weighs seventy-five pounds. If you Google the name you will see it is a mattress, a queen sized one to be exact.

We learned a number of things these past two weeks about how STEM is everywhere and to take what is around us every day to help our students realize that fact.

If you took this modern mattress as an example, what would you say?

Here are a few questions I have when I look at the box:

Engineering
How do they compress the whole mattress that small?
How do the various levels of foam stand up to compression over time?
How do they measure the level of out gassing?

Math
How many variables did they need to account for when designing one mattress for everyone?
How do they calculate shipping costs and times?

Technology
How do they measure the impact of their social media campaign?

By asking these questions it helps me and my own kids start thinking how STEM is everywhere. It helps to focus in on the idea that something as simple as the mattress encompasses many different STEM careers.

Setting Your Gmail Away Message

You will be away from your classroom for a bit and probably won't be checking email on a regular basis. Wouldn't it be nice to have Gmail respond for you alerting whoever is emailing that you out enjoying your summer? Setting up your vacation responder is pretty simple, a few clicks and a save. Start by clicking the gear icon in the upper right corner of Gmail. Scroll way down the page. Look for the vacation responder section. 1. Click to turn the responder on. 2. Add your first and last days away. We would recommend adding something short and to the point for the subject line. 3. Whatever you add here will be the body of the email you are automatically sending out. It would be a good idea to tell them when you are planning on returning and who to call if they need immediate assistance. We also recommend not checking the two buttons at the bottom. 4. Save changes . That is it. Now your inbox will automatically alert people that you are not in your...
